Job Description:

Civil / Structural Engineer

Direct Hire | Pittsburgh, PA (North Shore) | Competitive Salary and Benefits

About Our Client

Our client has been a leading supplier of high-quality construction products and engineering solutions in the Pittsburgh tri-state area since 1969, serving Western Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Strategically headquartered on Pittsburgh's North Shore, they are a trusted partner to contractors, project managers, and engineers on some of the region's most demanding heavy highway and infrastructure projects.

Their extensive product and services portfolio include forming and falsework systems, concrete supply, tools and equipment, and specialized engineering services — all backed by an experienced, knowledgeable team committed to exceeding client expectations on every project.

Why This Role Matters

Bridge infrastructure doesn't leave room for error — and neither does our client. As their Civil / Structural Engineer, you will be at the center of designing the falsework systems that make complex bridge construction possible on PennDOT heavy highway projects throughout the region. Your calculations, your designs, and your PE stamp will directly ensure the safety and structural integrity of some of Pennsylvania's most critical infrastructure.

This is not a back-office role. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with project managers, sales teams, and clients — translating complex engineering challenges into practical, compliant solutions. You'll also play a key role in mentoring and developing team members, sharing best practices in estimating, material takeoffs, and engineering processes. If you thrive on precision work, have a passion for heavy highway construction, and want your expertise to leave a lasting mark on the built environment, this is the opportunity for you.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and produce detailed falsework designs for bridge construction projects using AutoCAD, ensuring accuracy and constructability
  • Perform comprehensive structural calculations using MathCAD to verify the integrity and safety of all falsework designs
  • Provide estimates and/or material takeoffs for construction materials during pre-bid and active construction phases
  • Train and mentor team members on best practices for construction material estimating and takeoffs
  • Ensure all designs fully comply with PennDOT specifications, regulations, and design manuals, as well as AASHTO Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) standards
  • Collaborate with project managers, sales teams, and clients to understand project requirements and deliver effective engineering solutions
  • Review and stamp engineering drawings as a licensed Professional Engineer in Pennsylvania
  • Maintain accurate and organized project documentation, including design files, calculations, and correspondence
  • Provide technical support and expertise to internal teams and external stakeholders
  • Stay current with industry best practices, evolving PennDOT and AASHTO standards, and emerging technologies
  • Assist in the development of junior engineering staff as applicable

Requirements:  What You Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or a closely related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license — Pennsylvania PE; candidates holding a PE in another state will also be considered — our client is willing to assist in obtaining Pennsylvania licensure
  • Minimum of 5 years of post-baccalaureate experience in structural engineering, preferably with a focus on bridge falsework or heavy highway construction (required)
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD and MathCAD, with a strong understanding of structural analysis and design principles
  • In-depth knowledge of PennDOT or typical DOT design standards, specifications, and guidelines
  • Working knowledge of AASHTO LRFD specifications and their application to bridge and heavy highway design
  • Ability to accurately estimate and perform material takeoffs for construction projects
  • Demonstrated ability to train and mentor others in technical processes and engineering best practices
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions
  • Meticulous attention to detail in design and calculation, ensuring accuracy and compliance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical information to diverse audiences
  • Ability to work effectively within a collaborative team environment and alongside external partners
  • Capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting deadlines

Additional Preferred Experience & Skills:

  • Prior experience designing falsework or shoring systems specifically for bridge or heavy highway construction
  • Familiarity with PennDOT project workflows, submission processes, and design manuals
  • Experience with concrete formwork design and specifications
  • Experience collaborating with sales or estimating teams in a construction or engineering environment
  • Exposure to pre-bid estimating and material takeoff processes on large-scale infrastructure projects
